The Problem

Homelessness in Anacortes

A recent point-in-time survey conducted by the three local food banks and the Red Cross found 67 homeless persons on Fidalgo Island, many of whom were children. At the same time, an informal survey by the Anacortes School District indicated that an additional fourteen homeless children were attending classes. The Anacortes Salvation Army has indicated that the number of homeless on the island is probably much larger than the survey has indicated.

The next closest shelter, twenty miles away in Mount Vernon, is typically full and limited public transportation in Skagit County makes this option impractical in most cases

Additionally, this shelter is unable to house mothers with teenage boys and single fathers with children; these families only have access to seven emergency shelter apartments in all of Skagit County
