I am frequently asked, often exasperatedly, “I want to help but what can I do when I have no extra money, no time to volunteer and no goods to donate?”It’s a valid question in this time of economic crisis where families are already pushed to their limits.Any extra time they might have is dedicated to mitigating the impact of extra work hours and they may struggling to keep food on their own tables and clothes on their own children. When so many are facing unprecedented challenges, it is understandably difficult to think of ways to help homeless families in our community. My response to those who want to help, but think that they have nothing to offer is to remind them that anything helps. It doesn’t have to be a large financial donation to make a difference. One doesn’t have to spend hours volunteering at a shelter or feeding program to make their efforts count.Of course, all of these options are wonderful and I encourage everyone to give generously, but the question remains. What can you do if you have no money and no time?Educate yourself and talk about the issue of homelessness and poverty to everyone that will listen.Help break down the stereotypes about homeless individuals and help reduce the stigma so many people face.Encourage others to give what they are able and to talk to others about homelessness.Be compassionate, be aware and encourage others to do the same. While you may not have money or time, you can be the voice for the disenfranchised and affect real change without spending a penny.
