It Was Worth Every Ounce of Effort: Amie and Donovan’s Story
For seven years, home for Amie and Donovan meant a steady apartment and a steady job. Donovan worked hard as a journeyman roofer earning $57 an hour, while Amie focused her time and heart on homeschooling their children. Together, they had built a secure routine, one they believed would carry them far into the future.

Everything changed in an instant when Donovan suffered a devastating fall off a truck, severely injuring his back and leaving him permanently unable to perform heavy physical labor. Determined to keep the household afloat, he took a job at Amazon, but the drastic pay drop to $21 an hour created an immediate, crushing financial strain.
Tragedy struck again
To help support the family, Amie prepared to re-enter the workforce. However, just after Christmas, tragedy struck again. She became very ill and was admitted to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with adrenal carcinoma before she could even begin working. During that same overwhelming period, several neighbors in their building suddenly fell ill with cancer and passed away within weeks. Facing a life-threatening illness while watching friends pass away left her shell-shocked.
To compound their hardships, their landlord raised the rent from $1,200 to $1,600 a month. Facing a serious diagnosis and wanting to focus on being together, the family made the heartbreaking decision to put their belongings in storage and hand over the keys to their home.
For the next two years, the family’s life was defined by homelessness and moving constantly from shelter to shelter.

It can happen to anyone
During this difficult period, Amie gained a deep, firsthand understanding of housing insecurity. She encountered countless people facing similar struggles: not drug addicts, as stereotypes often suggest, but elderly individuals unable to afford rising rents on fixed incomes or people managing severe mental health challenges. It became clear to her that housing costs had far outpaced what everyday families can afford, reinforcing her belief in the importance of community compassion and mutual support. Nobody is immune to finding themselves without a home.

Through every trial, her deep faith provided a foundation of strength. Yet, experiencing homelessness meant living continuously in "survival mode", waking up each day just trying to navigate the next twelve hours without a clear path forward. On top of managing cancer treatments, navigating complex bureaucratic dead ends to replace missing identification and Social Security documentation proved immensely frustrating. Without proper ID, securing stable housing was virtually impossible.
A true gamechanger
After cycling through shelters for two full years, the family worried they would never break the cycle. That dynamic shifted the moment they entered the doors of the Anacortes Family Center.

Right away, AFC offered a clean, organized, and compassionate environment. Working closely with her case manager, Rachel, Amie and Donovan began tackling the barriers that had kept her family stuck for years.

The true gamechanger was learning how to shift from daily survival mode into structured, goal-oriented planning. Rachel showed them how to break massive, overwhelming challenges, such as replacing immigration records and saving for rent, into small, manageable weekly action items. Realizing that every barrier had a step-by-step solution completely transformed their mindset from feeling stuck to taking control of their family's future.

Simultaneously, AFC provided essential daily resources that allowed the family to save every dollar possible. When Donovan took a minimum-wage job, their food stamps were reduced; AFC’s food pantry bridged that gap with essentials like milk, cheese, and meat. The center also assisted with bus passes for transportation and provided hygiene products like toothpaste and toilet paper. By covering these daily expenses, AFC enabled the couple to save the funds needed for move-in costs.

On the path to stability and recovery
Within just a few months at AFC, the barriers that had felt insurmountable began to clear, yielding steady progress every week. Soon, Amie and Donovan achieved what had once felt out of reach: securing their very own permanent apartment for their family.
While Amie continues to manage her health, having a stable home has made all the difference in her recovery and daily life. Donovan has since secured a rewarding job working at Habitat for Humanity, giving back to the community while supporting his household.
Reflecting on their journey, Amie encourages anyone struggling with homelessness to reach out to the Anacortes Family Center. Having a safe, comfortable bed to rest in every night has made every ounce of effort worth it.
