“Survey finds homelessness; shelter plans moving ahead”

"On one day in October there were 67 homeless people - including 11 children - living in Anacortes, according to a survey conducted by the Anacortes Community Shelter Project, a group that is working to establish an emergency family shelter in the city..."

501(c)(3) nonprofit status

 

 

  • Initial funds are raised to purchase two properties on 27th Street.

  • A capital campaign raises more than an additional $2 million.

  • Emergency Shelter construction begins in 2008.

2009

Emergency Shelter

2010-2016

2010:

The organization's name is changed from "Anacortes Community Shelter" to "Anacortes Family Center" to avoid confusion about the purpose of the shelter. Some community members assumed the "shelter" rehomed pets.

2014:

AFC's "Rent Ready" program, adapted from a Community Action, is adopted.

2015:

AFC purchases the properties at 1016 and 1020 27th Street​​.

2016:

  • AFC purchases the properties at 1018 and 1020 27th Street​ in March​.

  • After a capital campaign kicked off in May, all funds needed to begin construction on the Transitional Shelter (now called "TB" for short) are raised within two months.

2017

Transitional Shelter

  • Clients receive additional support for up to two years.

  • Families pay 30% of their income as “rent," funds are returned upon graduation for a lease or mortgage.

2018

First Admin Building

  • AFC purchases the "little green house" property at 2702 Commercial Avenue.

  • AFC implements its  Mental Health program.

2019

 yes4housing campaign

The Yes4Housing.com campaign is launched. It raises $6.5 million; almost half the funds are earmarked to support AFC's affordable housing project.

2020

"Launch"

  • "Launch," AFC's first affordable housing complex, opens.

  • AFC creates the YouthConnect! mentoring program.

  • AFC strengthens partnerships with the Children's Museum and the Skagit County Health Department.

Community Outreach

  • AFC launches a community outreach program to assist unsheltered people outside the campus.

  • AFC enters into a partnership with Skagit Valley College to help clients earn their GED.

2023

"Landing"

  • AFC's second affordable housing complex, "Landing," opens; the first floor houses an early learning center.

  • AFC staff moves into the new Admin Building at 2702 Commercial.

Community Partnerships

  • AFC joins the Anacortes School District to in managing the McKinney-Vento Program.

  • Presents at National Association of Women and Family Shelters.

  • AFC partners with the Anacortes police and fire departments to collaborate on community outreach.

2025

Nonprofit of the year

  • AFC is again awarded "Nonprofit of the Year" by the Anacortes Chamber of Commerce.

  • Thanks to a generous donor, AFC adds a single family home to its affordable housing program.
